2-3 times a week is sufficient for newborns. Daily bathing can dry out their delicate skin. Sponge baths are recommended until the umbilical cord stump falls off, usually within 1-3 weeks. After that, gentle baths in warm water with a soft towel for drying is ideal. Between baths, clean the face, neck folds, and nappy area daily.

Use a baby nail file for the first few weeks as nails are very soft and a file is safer than clippers. Once nails harden slightly around 4-6 weeks, baby nail clippers with a safety guard work well. Cut when baby is asleep or just fed and relaxed. Cut straight across and file the edges smooth. Newborn nails grow surprisingly fast and need attention every 5-7 days.

Bamboo and muslin are the two best options for baby skin. Bamboo is naturally hypoallergenic, ultra-soft, and highly absorbent — it dries quickly and gets softer with every wash. Muslin is lightweight and breathable, ideal for warm Indian weather. Avoid towels with synthetic fibres or rough textures as they can irritate a baby's skin. You can start using a soft baby hair brush from birth. Gentle brushing stimulates the scalp and helps prevent cradle cap — the common flaky scalp condition in newborns.
